as much as i try to dispute the follwing claim, there is little doubt in my mind 'gimme shelter' is the greatest rock n roll recording ever made, the hautning opening richards riff, fuck it we all know the song, its just perfect, i think its my favorite song of all time, anyone else have contenders for the 'greatest rock n roll song ever recorded'.

The Stones sucked in the 70's ( and after ) , as heard on Hot Rock disc 2.
grnrser: I'm not sure... "Mercy , mercy " , it's a great song but not so rock n roll. |

have you listened to exile on main st? well, it came out in 72, and its their best. sticky fingers had great songs too. stones didnt suck in the 70s, but they maybe were a little hit n miss. anyways, its sad they had to taint their legacy by continuing on as a band, untill well, now. theyre fuckin dinosaurs. and as for negative approach, i have loved them since i was 15, but best rock n roll recording ever? doubt it, i love their live stuff way more than than their studio recordings. |

No , I only got Hot Rock , with Brown Sugar , Gimme Shelter , You can't always get what you want ( stupid intro ) etc .I like none of them. Beggars Banquet is their best to me. Anyway , who gave me a bad reputation ? ( for not liking everything from them , wtf ). Keith Richards is around or what? |

I wouldn't say Gimme Shelter is the best rock and roll song but I think it is the best Rolling Stone song. Merry Clayton, the backing vocalist, really makes that song what it is!

I've listened to some of their other 70's material , a long time ago ( I don't remember well ) and it just bored me. Still , I don't have the patience and money to check every record from a band that I don't like ( or from a certain period in the present case ) to be sure that they haven't got one good song or riff. A question for you : do you prefer the Rolling Stones in the 60's or in the 70's ? |

It's an excellent documentary, not just a rock movie, that captures the dissolution of 1960s idealism. It powerfully shows how self-obsessed the counter-culture became.
In any case, my favorite scenes are the Mussel Shoals studio scenes.

from the beginning of their career up to 72 they were great, I even like the psychedelic albums. then mick taylor left and they sucked. but some girls is a pretty solid album.

Mmm, I wouldn't say they sucked entirely. They became sort of spotty the rest of the 70s. Goats Head, Only R&R, and Some Girls still have some great moments. Even Black and Blue and Tattoo You are listenable if you're in teh right mood. The El Mocombo side of Love You Live is fantastic. I lost faith in them after Tattoo, though.
