I'll Start.

The Pop Group-Y.

Truly one of the most ecclectic bands and records in history. This came out in the late 70's. At the time, there were certainly "Punk" bands starting to fuck around with experimental sounds; This Heat, Wire, The Fall, X Ray Spex, that whole No Wave Thing, etc... But I highly doubt anyone saw anything like this coming. An amazing mash up of Punk attitude, Free Jazz instrumentation and harmololodics, funky ass bass lines and beats, incredible Fela-like rhythms, and so much more. Nothing on this album sounds out of place, a skrony saxophone squal can be played over a minimal funk beat while Mark Stewart is making wierd howling vocal sounds. Oh, and about the vocals, they're incredible. I love a strong vocal presence in music. Captain Beefheart, The Fall, To Live and Shave in LA, Boredoms, Sonic Youth, etc.. All these bands have amazing vocalists with extremly unique styles. Mark Stewart is in the same canon as those fellas. He has an amazing vocal style, I don't really know how to describe it. Screams, whispers, high pitched drowned out groans. Jesus. And his lyrics are amazing too. Anyways, I love this album. Sometimes I'd go as far as to say its my favorite record of all time, but this isn't one of those times. It's up there though.

Side Note: Mark Stewart put out a solo record this year entitled "Edit". It got a decent bit of coverage, i.e., a Wire cover story. But anyways, this record is seriously one of the best of the year, and from what I can tell, no one has really been talking about it on here. I suggest you do so.

The Subhumans "The Day the Country Died"

this album is about as honest and pissed of as you can get.

Sleater-Kinney "The Hot Rock"

too personal.

Bob Marley and the Wailers "Natty Dread"

This album is a defining album in an of itself, from the beginning to the end, it is a pure reflection of myself.

and of course:

The Grateful Dead "Anthem to the Sun"

this album is perfect.

thinking fellers union local # 282 - mother of all saints

Experimental, playful, complex, melodic, memorable, easy to endlessly replay. Great riffs, weird vocals, a very tight but loose band (if that makes sense).... doesn't take itself too seriously (but is very serious about making music)... all the songs are very different from each other. Sounds like it was recorded in a toilet, which is a good sound for this kind of music. Every time I play it, I hear something new. Just endlessly fascinating and very rewarding and embodies everything I love about music.

Also, as a runner up, captain beefheart... anything by him really, though I guess I mention Ice Cream for Crow a lot so I'll go with that... it has all the elements of the above album.. but with lots of slide guitar, which is like my favorite thing, period.

the only post punk band whackier than the pop group i can think of is big flame (who im listening to now), but they didnt form till 82, and no doubt "Y" had a huge influence.

Einstuerzende Neubauten - Haus der Luege
No filler tracks, an amazing title track, an amazing epic, lengthy song, makes me feel nostalgic, great percussion, fantastic vocals, great guitar work, the best guitar solo ever, I can listen to it three times a day and it won't bore me.
Probably my all time favourite album.

rites of spring- s/t (end on end for you reissue people). i was going to pick damaged by black flag but i find more things in common emotionally (lyrics and music wise) with this album than damaged (ask me ten years ago and damaged would have been my pick). also, the music is some of the best music i heard. the first time i heard this album it went to number one favorite album. now it's just number five.

if i could pick more than one i would've picked damaged and is this real? by the wipers.

"Damaged" would definitley be my choice if the thread was, "Name an album that embodied everything you loved about when you were 14". Not that I still don't adore that record with all my heart, I do, its just, black flag only represents certain aspects of music that I love; heavy, intense, violent, fast, angry, confused. that sorta shit. this is for records that have everything in your eyes.

If this were "Name an album that embodies everything you love when you were 14", I would've said Boredoms - Pop Tatari. Haha. I still love that album but when I was 14 I LOVED it.

yeah that's what i meant and why it's didn't get picked. rites of spring has everything to me, emotions that i can relate to, awesome fast to slow punk rock (and the other way around). also, some of the songs are pretty noisey too.

If this was about when you was 14, mine would've been either the Ramones' Anthology or Television's Marquee Moon.

Another Side Of by Bob Dylan, After The Goldrush by Neil Young (loved them as a child) or Nevermind by Nirvana (teenage years).

They stimulate emotions so directly, and I listened to them at times when I could love music (as opposed to appreciate it - albeit appreciate on a high level - which seems to be the case now). Somehow I don't love Hex Enduction Hour though it's probably my idea of a perfect album.
