People who try to be cool by saying The Kinks were better than the Beatles are usually pretentious arseholes. But the Kinks were definitely brilliant too

Not better than the Beatles by a long shot. Or the Stones. But still really good, for a while there. |

Hey don't bother with any greatest hits compilations. They're good, but they miss a lot. The Kinks' were at their best on the album cuts during the late '60s'. Just download these albums: The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society Arthur Lola vs powerman and the moneygoround. |

good advice there...that live record was when the kinks morphed into a popular american arena band. def. get Something Else, Face to Face and Village Green too.

I love the Kinks. It may be that I've just worn myself thin on the Beatles, but I think the Kinks are the best of the British Invasion bands.
You know I haven't listened to all their 1970s work, but they weren't utter shit in the 70s. I love Muswell Hillbillies & Preservation Act I. Two awesome albums that are overlooked by a lot of Kinks fans. |

Maybe they're better than the Stones I don't know. But remember the Beatles were pretty snarky at times. Example: "Piggies". John was a pissed off dude. |

Oh yeah. That's a great tune! I think Village Green is like the blue print for many of the "kooky" indie-rock artists of the last two decades. Spoon, for instance. I can imagine Spoon putting out... well... just about ANY Kinks song and seeing it become a college-radio "hit". Many bands have stolen from the Kinks, few have acknowledged them. |
