The Millau bridge over the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains is more than 300m (984ft) high - taller even than the country's Eiffel Tower.
The bridge, which opens to traffic on Thursday, was built to clear summer traffic jams around the town. The BBC's Paris correspondent, Caroline Wyatt, says the bridge is one of the most breathtaking ever built. She says that with its concrete and steel pillars soaring high above the morning fog in the Tarn Valley, the construction makes a spectacular sight

Holy fuck. That is terrifying. There is no chance in hell I would be able to remain calm on that.

Thanks for bumping, though I'm neither in fear or indifferent. It's really interesting. I wonder what sort of safety measures they employed? Does France have earthquakes like the rest of us?

just to put things in perspective, you drive across that motherfucker higher then the top of the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the road on this bridge is FOUR TIMES higher then the driving height of the Golden Gate
Driving height of Millau = 270m Driving height of Golden Gate= 70m

i'm terribly afraid of heights, so i'd probably have a panic attack and die on the way across it.
it's really beautiful, though.

I never thought I would say this about a bridge, but it's beautiful. I would feel safe on it just for it's visual aesthetics, which in reality makes almost no sense at all.

it's not nonsensical. the bridge has a very soft and modern aesthetic that could maybe soothe the uneasiness of having to cross it.

Well, honestly I think that when you're on it it wouldn't be that terrifying... I mean, thinking of standing on a little road 300mt high IS terrifying, but that bridge is huge and has (hopefully) well built protections on the sides... Even if you're afraid of heights you should not be too worried, like when you are on top of towers with that sort of "cage" to prevent suicides and objects throws... I think the perspective would change radically when on the bridge.
that said, it looks really cool. I've been on the malmo bridge last summer and it is cool too, but way lower.

It's only going to be terrifying if you look over the edge. If you just keep your eyes on the road, then it's just another piece of road.
You wouldn't get me up there in anything more than a slight breeze though. |
