I was wondering what the most ever squeezed on one record is. I was always amazed that one of the SYRs was nearly an hour long but came across Dream House by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela which is nearly 40 minutes per side. I know this is a geeky thing but I want to know if there are any longer single LPs?

Technically, one would say that the 500 locked grooves records was the longest. That would be prickish though. I've a feeling there is a definite cap on how much you can fit on one side though, as fidelity is lost entirely past a certain point, no matter what the signal. You'll probably find that the longest record is probably one with a very small dynamic range - I'll put ten pounds down to say that it won't be a reggae, drum n' bass or bleedcore techno record.
In fact, I'm pretty sure the fidelity problem was one of the reasons Young rarely issued records in the days of vinyl.

Glice is probably right.
i always thought Pussy Galore - Live In the red is really long. well, and that is a really low fidelity record. could be wrong though, havenīt listened to that for quite a while. The longest i have, is a record with speeches of important and historical politicians in Austria. One side is about 50min. Hitler is on there too, with a speech he delivered in my hometown in 1938. Damn, thatīs so scary. |

500 lock grooves, thats 1.8 seconds each on 33 1/3. 250 grooves on each side which comes out to 450 seconds each side... or 7:50 per side, so acually technically its really a very short record in theory but yes of course since each groove goes indefinatly, it does come out much longer.
and yes, longer records pose problems in mastering. i have a caroliner record that is quite long, and really doesnt sound that great.

Longest I had was a Miles Davis record.....about 30 minutes on one side. The fidelity was crap !!!! Too thin 'a grooves.
Zappa kept his about 15-16 minutes and the sound was incredible !!! PHAT GROOVES MAN !!!!!

Torr Rundgren's 1975 LP "Initiation" is 32 min on side one and close to 36 min on side 2 making it almost an hour & 8 min long. I have a copy and it sounds quite excellent. The fidelity and range is fine. The only noticeable issue is that reverse echo (ware you hear a very low 'false start" one revolution before the music actually begins). This sometimes occurs with standard length LP's too. "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" & "A Wizard, a True Star" are also unusually long.
Ironically, the Todd Rundgren LP "Todd" released just before "Initiation" was a double LP and was actually about two minutes shorter then the single disc "Initiation". |

There was a LP Series called, The Golden Hour.
I have it on good authority that, Pop Will Eat Itself - Cure For Sanity plays out at 65 minutes. Also, some classical LP's play out at 80 minutes. |
