My dad wanted to buy it on itunes with his 15 dollar gift card. I told him to go buy the real thing. Luckily it is 20 dollars on itunes and 10 at bestbuy...

I have, and didn't like it.
But I've never really been fond of their music...

i got it and was listening to it tonight at the gym. none of it rocked until the 21st track. they've really become just a talented pop band. i won't say that they don't have any nice-sounding melodic songs, but any of the heavy guitars or funky bass seem to be missing. they hyped this album so much that i thought it would smack of awesomeness on a first listen, but that just didn't happen. i love the video for dani california. too bad all the bands that seemed to influence them in that video aren't readily recognizable. maybe it will get better with subsequent listens. the second disk seems to be a lot better.

The new album makes me wish I had stuck to my self-appointed, arbitrary rule of not buying/listening to any of their albums after what I heard from Californication.

I dug the guitar work when i saw em' on SNL.. Apparently he forgot how to play for a while b/c of all the drugs he took...? But he did go off, and have a nice Hendrix-y tone..

apparently you haven't heard niandra lades and usually just a t-shirt, john's first solo record after he left rhcp on the blood sugar tour. one of the best albums in decades, smacks of syd barret type genius minus the pop aesthetic. his second album smile from the streets you hold was a bit of a fucked up junkie album but there is some great stuff on it. to record water for ten days is also a good album. but nothing compares to tshirt his first... all recorded on analogue four track, sounds nice and some incredilbe singing and playing on it. |

when they did snl for blood sugar john was soooo sloppy. under the bridge was a wreck tho i dont think he had gotten to the heroin all the way yet. he was probably really high on the weeed and hating his life so he just didnt give a shit. yeah niandra lades is an excellent cd. lots of great guitar playing and singing and writing etc..... havent heard from the streets and record water is pretty good tho some of the songs are too similar for me. |

The main reason I listen to the Peppers is because Frusciante kicks ass. But I think his second album was cool. I think that was the one where he released it just to make drug money. It was one of the early albums. But he's better now.

Nice to see a lot of Frusciante love on this forum... I got into his solo music in 1997 around the same time I got into Sonic Youth... He's still my favorite solo act (although his latest stuff doesn't even approach Niandra Lades or Smile From the Streets you Hold, I still a bunch of goodness in it.) and Sonic Youth are still my favorite band, period. The two are deeply connected in my mind because they were the two artists who kind of opened me up to any quote unquote experimental music, and I wouldn't have been receptive without them I don't think.
Plus, a Frusciante song has my favorite fucking lyrics ever... off Niandra Lades and Ussually Just a T-shirt: Untitled 12 Blind your head in catastrophes, icicles, No one's fed in cycles led by cycles dead asked to shine the flag, Love is distant and Blue scents like apples bite And flow through my hands. I said "Hi" to a man who shot his sister, pan down through the station, And jumped in front of a train. He said "I was a bit confused to meet you," but that's what scissors do to a day. So there smile paves the way and sand drips with waves And clouds my head because I'm a fortune tellers bed. And I am the tune's played by the goons who ride to fairies wombs And stole the rode the other way And sold tomorrow to yesterday. And I know the feeling of pushing you out of a building Tiny people pulsating hit the sky You hit the ground got up and wiped your face You expected to fly. Wind up your misfortunes and sling 'em to a Maitre D' Who wears dead butterflys on his face and is hoping to grow wings He really wants to tell you "Hey, Give your tears today." Grind your souvenirs into your stolen years Hands in your pockets your hands getting numb in an urban grind slide. Do the avenues that seem to meet defeat you? Have you ever tried to hug the sky behind your head? I walked forever sight-seeing the screen shuffled a mean green ping dive Head first into a hole full of water dragged round and round like floating machine. Dove dancing to a fable told in a sea of disintegration Crawled to a celebration of dirt and leaves that taste like wine Sucked from a hair that digs into the darkness Full of the fare that my head rides. I slide your kind through a ladder hanging on a star, stray close so far away from the climb. A taped line section of introspection to rewind would be to recline. Hit the pounds underling and gently ride on the slide. Tell your problems to Zero He's got nothing to hide. |

WHO GIVES A FUCK! It's just another stupid album by them writing 20 different songs about Cali. Enough is enough. I wish they'd just hurry up & DIE already!

Well, shit, I got carried away there didn't I? The new Chili Peppers record, waaaaaaaaay too long but okay. Severely okay. Could have made a decent 14 song record out of it though, or something. All feelings of hatred are pretty justified now though.

I think its a record that will grow on you! But to be fair it doesnt hit you like 'Californication' or 'By The Way' does. I don't think it can justify being a double album. However there are some amazing songs on it!

if there is a thread about a particular band on here that i dont like i usually just let it slide and say nothing, somebody has posted it cuz they like the band and hey..who am i to piss on their parade, but i'm so so sorry, i detest this band i hate everything they stand for... which is what by the way? Jocks with socks on their cocks? nahh fuck them.
and did you see how in Anthony Kiedis autobiography he mentioned how he slept with Flea's sister and the first Flea heard about it was when he read it... How sad...poor Flea could'nt read anymore of the book as he was so upset...... define me define ME! that was a funny day.
