I can't understand how I didnt hear about this earlier.
April 11, 2008 Less than 2 weeks until the Mats issues (April 22), woo hoo. New episodes of BSG and 'new' Mats music, so I beg to differ with Mr, Eliot- April is not the cruelest month after all. Also coming in April is the May issue of SPIN, which will have a big story on the Mats and the reissues. Tommy, Paul, Chris and Peter Jesperson were all interviewed for the feature, so it should be very interesting. The issue should be hitting newsstands in the next week or so. Bonus Material on the Albums: Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out the Trash": "Raised in the City," live, 1980 - demo* "Shutup," live, 1980 - demo* "Don't Turn Me Down," live, 1980 - demo* "Shape Up," live, 1980 - demo* "You Ain't Gotta Dance," studio demo* "Get on the Stick," studio demo* "Oh Baby," studio demo* "Like You," outtake* "Get Lost," outtake* "A Toe Needs a Shoe," outtake* "Customer," alternate take* "Basement Jam," rehearsal* "If Only You Were Lonely" "Stink": "Staples in Her Stomach," outtake* "Hey, Good Lookin'," outtake* "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock," outtake* "You're Getting Married," solo home demo* "Hootenanny": "Lookin' for Ya" "Junior's Got a Gun," outtake - rough mix* "Ain't No Crime," outtake* "Johnny Fast," outtake - rough mix* "Treatment Bound," alternate version* "Lovelines," alternate vocal* "Bad Worker," solo home demo* "Let It Be": "20th Century Boy" "Perfectly Lethal," outtake* "Temptation Eyes," outtake* "Answering Machine," solo home demo* "Heartbeat -- It's a Lovebeat," outtake - rough mix* "Sixteen Blue," outtake - alternate vocal* To hold you over in the meantime, here's a behind the scenes look at the making of "Pleased to Meet Me"(good, but not my favorite mats album) http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyl...%20Story%20of/

Meh. I hate bonus material. What's wrong with just the original LPs as they are?

Wow, if they were just reissuing them, then that would mean little to me since I have them all, but that bonus stuff sounds amazing.

Yet another reason for everyone in a certain age group here to go on and on about "the good old days," ignore the fact that this music has aged poorly, and bemoan the so-called "decline" of our area's music scene, despite the fact that it is currently at one of its most interesting moments.
I liked them when I was a teenager, but when "Tim" came out I said "well, looks like they suck now." These days the only song I can stand from them is "Go" off of Stink, and I think that might be pure nostalgia talking. (Nice to see a rare difference of opinion between myself and Dead-Air, though!) |

Awesome, i love them. "Go" is fuckin awesome, i kinda wish they would have stuck to their heavier stuff like on stink. Westerberg is a great writer. I havent heard a whole lot of Tommy Stinson solo stuff. I actually saw a Chris Mars album the other day? i think i want to go back and get it

I'm not the right guy to ask. Due to where I live, I've been overexposed.
It doesn't do it for me. |

I'm glad the independent records are getting reissued first. I figured I'd have to wait many frustrating years as inferior later records (All Shook Down) get reissued while classic lps (Let It Be) would grow moss. The replacements were one of the best bands of the 80s, I wish I could have seen them live with bob.

i just have some greatest of records of replacements, i think some of their songs are fuckin great and others are fuckin awful so i never wanted to risk it and buy a full record of theirs. i mean, wasnt their inconsistencey part of their appeal anyways?

Pleased to Meet Me is definitely my favorite 'Mats album. It has far fewer filler tracks to my ears (I think the only track I'd consider filler is Shooting Dirty Pool.) The closing three tracks of Red Red Wine/Skyway/Can't Hardly Wait are just heart-wrenchingly gorgeous.
Let it Be and Tim are pretty damn close to my love for PtMM. I can take or leave their other albums. |

Yeah, except for this part: Quote:
Complete agreement there, but I still like listening to the indie records be it nostalgia or whatever. I don't find the music to have aged poorly anymore than the Dead Boys or any other brilliant bunch of drunks who could actually rock while stumbling on perfect pop hooks. They were the real deal, they weren't Bracket or anything pathetic like that. I hardly think when I was eighteen was "the good old days", but then that's why "Unsatisfied" sounded so fucking perfect over and over and over. Once every year or two, it still does. |
