I'm buying a video 60gb this summer, because I like having MP3 + Records over CD's now. Mixtapes are swell too.

my creative zen touch has been dropped on concrete, thrown at walls on accident, and dropped so many times and there's barely any scratches. twenty gigs for 229. i'd get one of these.

i have a 20g ipod it rules you can actually hack them to release their full recording potential of 24bit 96khz which is great, and i recommend not having your mp3 any lower than 192khz

I have a 30GB Creative Nomad Zen Extra. Had it about a year and a half and never have problems with it. I have over 6,000 songs on it, and I could probably fit another couple thousand. It's bulkier than an IPod, but I prefer something bigger than having something smaller and easier to lose.

As a non-ipodder (too much vinyl/ ludditism), I was wondering how many actual albums you can store on them... I'm thinking that, as I buy an awful lot of music, how many of my CD's is it realistically going to store? I'm thinking that for people with CD collections of less than 150-odd, it's probably quite easy, but as mine is nudging into the 1,000 mark, I wouldn't seriously be able to put everything on one i-pod (or whatever), would I?

it depends on which ipod you buy! the ipod mini, which is the one i have, is 4GB so it will hold 1,000 songs. and the normal sized ipod holds 10,0000 songs i believe. so it really depends on how many songs you have!

Well, it's not really a question of the number of songs, surely? It must be about the amount of information on the CD. For instance, were I to convert, say, my Melt banana stuff, then I would have an awful lot of quite small peices of information, their songs being shorter. If I were to convert, say, Fushitusha's 'I saw it! That which before I could only sense...", which is a about 90-odd minutes long (over two parts), then that would take up about the same amount of space as lots of MB songs... So, the basic question is - What is the physical information limit of an i-pod, and how much information does a 70-ish minute CD convert to?

hmmmm right now my ipod says i'm using 2.06GB out of 4GB, and i have 1.3 days worth of music on it, which would be 32 hours!! so i'd say that since mine is a 4GB it can probably hold 48 hrs worth of music.

So, by that estimation, 40gb would by roughly 480 hrs. And, following the guesstimates, that would be in the region of 480 CDs. Which is still no where near enough, at ten times the capacity of your current ipod. I suspect it'll be a few years before I even consider getting one.

I have the 30BG 5th generation video IPod. It's awesome, i can store also Quicktime videos and photos on it, i am also getting used to that retarted ITunes program and it was generally worth the money.
I only have one big problem with it - the battery life. shit, has anybody experienced the same thing???? in the manual it says, it should play up to 14hours on one charging, but to me it only lasts like 2 hours and then dies. is there something wrong? any hints?

on a 20gig you can hold about 3000 songs at 192kbps i don't have my whole collection on mine or either on my laptop, im waiting to buy an extrenal harddrive so i can chop and change what is on, i have 1100 cds and a few hundred vinyl so no it wont all fit, as i said before you shouldnt go below 192kbps below that the music is compressed too much and starts getting to close to telephone hold music quality.
the back light and videos will decrease your battery life very quickly you will get nearly the full 14hours with just music and remember to extend the battery life you need to flatten it once per month |

But does it make a difference that an overwhelming proportion of my CD's are not 11 tracks, 3-5 minutes songs?
Ridiculous to argue from my point of view, I simply don't want one of the buggers, and how long would it take to put the entirety of my CD collection on there?

How long would it take? 15-45 minutes? I don't know I've never done that many. I know the 11 tracks/3-5 minute thing but I'm just giving you an average.
