I don't hear any of the tape work on Signals, Calls, and Marches or VS.
Mission of Burma seems like they would have been such a cool band to see at their prime. |

Mission of Burma is the exact same band now that they were in the 80's. I didn't see them in the 80's but it is true

You haven't been listening to it. You know that wierd swirling computerish jittering sound on Weatherbox (it takes up a third of the fucking song!) is a tape loop. There is also a brief wierd tape loop in Academy Fight Song. The "wee ooo, wee ooo" sounds on Red...those are tape loops.

Wow, I can't believe I've never noticed that stuff. Red I noticed earlier today on my own while listening to "The Horrible Truth." I guess whenever I hear the more tape loopy songs I'm not listening for tape loops, and when I'm listening to songs for tape loops, they just don't happen to have them.

I was going to say I wasn't quite old enough, but really I'm just not quite east coast enough. I saw the U-men, Green River, and Sonic Youth all in 1985, so I could have seen Burma if they'd toured through Seattle on the Horrible Truth tour, but I don't think they did. I was just catching on anyhow.
I saw them in Portland last year though, and they were fucking amazing. Roger Miller took my picture too, I saw it on his blog (granted I'm one face in the crowd, but still totally cool.) I agree that they were completely consistent to the old recordings. Bob Weston even insisted on being placed in Martin Swope's same off stage position and using all tapes and no digital for his loops. It felt every bit as "authentic" as seeing Rocket from the Tombs with Richard Lloyd filling in for Peter Laughner. |

Completely agreed to what dead-air said. I've seen them twice now in the past two years and both shows are as, if not even more, consistent as the sound and feel of the older records and new ones. They still manage to completely fuck my hearing at every show as well, fantastic.

I wish they'd play Pittsburgh.
Ooh, my next birthday, that is what I'm gonna wish for when I blow out the candles! |

I really can't believe you can't hear the tape stuff on Vs. It's all over the place! Though I can't really hear that much on Signals.. just remember that it's usually real subtle.. it sounds like guitar effects at time.. it's cool shit though.. just a really amazing band. Perfect band, actually, I don't think I dislike any of their songs..
Now that I'm thinking about it, they're probably the best band I never listen to.. |

I was always waiting for like a loop of sound to jump out of me. I've always heard the cool sounds, never put 2 and 2 together and realized they were coming from swopes, even though I knew about his contribution.

I fucking love Mission of Burma. I'm pissed I haven't gotten to see them yet.
Yeah, the tape loop shit is all over though. Very cool. |
