Thurston Moore may be best known for bringing the noise with legendary alt-rockers Sonic Youth, but his musical output is far from confined to his work with that band. The Northampton, Mass., resident has become equally well known for his frequent collaborations with everyone from Andrew W.K. to Dave Grohl.

Moore—who was raised in Bethel, Conn.—is on the short list of candidates for the proposed Connecticut Music Hall of Fame. This Sunday he returns to the state for an under-the-radar performance in the intimate confines of BAR with his Northampton Wools side project, creating all sorts of beautiful, unruly noise alongside fellow Pioneer Valley experimental guitarist Bill Nace.

Rounding out the bill in the latest of Shaki Presents' stellar series of free Sunday night shows are Noise Nomads and Crooked Hook.
You can also catch Thurston Moore recreating his debut solo release, "Psychic Hearts," on Sept. 17 at Pearl Street.

I attended this show but left before Northampton Wools played because I had to catch a train. I saw Mr. Moore in the bar area. Did anyone else go to this show?

i'm not sure if it was noise nomads or if it was crooked hook i saw. it was whoever played first. they were kind of psychedelic. they were a trio of bass, guitar and drums. they were pretty powerful. kind of minimal and droney but not boring at all. lyrics mentioned seafaring themes. i thought of the storm gustav. all in all pretty exciting.

I'm not sure I approve of all this touchy feely-spectacle stuff

"Pretty soon, Nace and Moore were backing up into the crowd like two basketball players muscling their way into the paint for a layup. Moore surfed the crowd for a minute. Nace made his guitar howl with pain. The distinction between audience and performer continued to dissolve as fans grabbed at the guitars, adding to the maelstrom of sound that the instuments continued to generate. Moore and Nace ended up in the middle of the floor with their guitars on the ground, still extorting new and strange sounds from them, with the assistance of various helpful audience members."

reminiscent of Moore's antics at a Dream Aktion Unit gig in '05.
