Broham:

If you were videotaping a street parade, with dancers and what not, and it's a 1-2 person job (camera + assist/boom operator), what kind of mic would you use? onboard short shotgun? omnidirectional lavalier? i'm thinking of combining the both (2 XLR inputs) for directional + ambient sound, but JOO DA MAN when it comes to mics, so i'll pay heed to your suggestions if possible. Simplicity is of course best from the logistical standpoint so if 1 mic could cut it that'd be it.

No interviews, just people in the streets, and music as the paraders (is that a noun?) go past us.

Thanks, in advance.

Budget for hiring mics? Film sound isn't my forte I think Tokolosh is you man for that. But the shotty/lav sound like a potential winner. Sennheiser ME66 shotgun, fairly short, about a foot long. Dpa 4060 lav. Then mix down so sounds good. Seeing however that there are no interviews you could use sound FX for all the background crowd noise like they do in alot of sports broadcasting.

If you've got a boom guy, ask him!

I'd say on cam shotgun and another on a pole, keep 'em on different channels and you have choices in post. Mix it and you don't.

i always separate the channels

pardon me i'm at a party right now and i had this drunken memory of what i forgot to mention: i get enough to pick up audio, but they want to maybe used independently.

what i'm looking for i guess is not so much a mic but a file sample of what a good crowd recording should sound like. because it's not going to be hyperclean, but can it be good enough that people can say "this is a sample of dance X"

you know what i mean?

that's why i shouldn't put background effect-- they want to document the things

ok pardon me if this doesn't make sense but i'm plastered. i think it makes sense.

ok i better go before i damage this macheen.
