The phone hacking scandal in the UK has led to the closure of the News of the World and a frantic scramble within the British political establishment to disown Murdoch, but what real impact will it have on his empire as a whole? How is it being reported abroad? How big is Murdoch in other countries and could this scandal have implications on his international operation?

it's in the news here mostly because of a) the implication that 911 victims were tapped and b) we like to laugh at other's misfortunes (when given the chance).
all in all, I'd say it's not such a big deal as CARmageddon is. lol news. |

NYC has been hypnotized by the tragic killing and dismemberment of an 8 year old boy all week.
Its too bad someone didn't set them up and leave fake voicemails murdoch would report on and then look foolish. |

as example, currently at the top of (the US version of) CNN.com, there are two pictures.
one, of Mr Murdoch, takes up 1/3 the width of the page; the remaining 2/3's has to do with "is cheerleading really a sport??" (apparently, yes, it is). I hope this helps. |

Much as I would love this to be the beginning of the downfall of Murdoch, this will blow over in no time and the Murdoch clan will be around for some time to come. Rags like NOTW will exist as long as the demand is there. And the demand is definitely there. And its replacement (The Sunday Sun) will be just the same. They'll just be more careful how they get their information in future.

I agree. Remember the public outcry about the paparrazi after Diana, then a few months later they're back scrutinising pictures of Jennifer Aniston's cellulite. The only real blow to Murdoch is his alienation from politics but even that may change if the public once again forgive and forget.

I don't know about 'wasted'. If nothing else it's undermined Murdoch's political clout in a way that can only be a good thing. And even if things do blow over, I can't see things reverting back to how they were before the scandal broke. Plus the legal ramifications for Murdoch in the US, where his company's registered. (I say, really knowing only half the story.)

Also, not wasted because it was worth it alone to see Murdoch crawling to the Dowler family and desperately trying to appear human.

Wasted because it's not going to change anything.

I think that if anybody is truly shocked by the hacking revelations then they either don't understand the odious nature of the tabloid press or they don't care.
Either would explain why the Mail continues to thrive. |

On a slightly different note: Oh what a lovely war - Murdoch's other legacy.

Pookie, demonrail666 and Glice - I live in your own country, speak two languages fluently and talk to more foreigners than you do. Anyway, this is not important news. I suppose they are if you're a local.

It's turned into an ugly witch hunt against News International by the other papers to deflect the fact they're just as guilty of hacking.
