I can think of a few Joy Division songs easily being sang by you Dean Martins etc. Didn't Martin Hamnett give Ian Curtis a greatest hits of Frank Sinatra songs that inspired him to sing that way on 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'?

No word of a lie - I once heard a milkman whistling love will tear us apart.
There's a fair slew of Smiths songs; I always loved the idea of someone crooning Bachelorette by Bjork; Einsteurzende's Silence is sexy is rife for a Britney (or somesuch) cover; The phrasing on Expressway is perfect for a swing cover. And I'll kindly remind you of the existence of Nouvelle Vague before anyone else does.

There's an Irish Elvis impersonator called The King who does covers of modern songs that Elvis may have covered if he was alive today. He's done Love Will Tear Us Apart.
Probably the most famous one he did (it has a video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoYc91Uohuk |
