I was just wondering if any of you guys know what kind of a cut musicians get from releases such as CDs and downloads? I would imagine its not that much and that the record companies get a disproportionate amount, but I may be wrong...

not much, most of it goes to the record company. i don't know the exact percentage but i can probably find out for you. bands make most of their money touring.

I would guess it varies greatly from band to band and record compny to record company.

according to a friend of mine who's a musician by profession, her band gets like 80 or 90 cents for every $15 CD sold, which is approximately something like 16 percent?
utter fuckery. keep on filesharing kids. it fucks the record company, not the band.

in what band?
edit i am so fucking terrible at doing math that's like 6 percent not 16 it seems unreasonable but when you consider the fact that it's on an independent label for a band who makes most of their money playing shows in new york city...well it's still unreasonable. but it's not surprising. considering this, the CD is probably more like $10 but i've never bought one because i don't have a CD player so i don't actually know, in which case they would be getting 9% off a CD which is more reasonable. finish school and you won't fail at math.

traditionally, a percentage between 10%-15% after recouping costs and investments (also known as advances.)
some bands get more, some less. |

Depends on the band and the record company.
Big bands do receive a lot of cash for it though, my dad's a musician and he used to have a big hit in Belgium during the nineties. He still receives lots of money for it... I dunno I'll ask more about this shit tomorrow.

they get fuck all.. its about 10% if they have a good deal.....
the band i am kinda doing p.r. for are lucky to make a cent out of their first two releases but they are doing it independendtly and by themselves.. anyone who gets more than 20% of sales i would look at with an arched dubious eyebrow...... |
