This thread is totally dedicated to Sonic Youth's influences, whether it be music, art, books, movies, etc.

Take a look at this thread from a Mars Volta forum (http://www.thecomatorium.com/board/i...howtopic=20371), it's a really, good acurate list of The Mars Volta's influences which we should try to compile like. Try to quote from magazine scans, interviews, etc. I'll start it off:

Speaking of the mix tape, what’s on Sonic Youth’s road tape?
Flipper. Flipper still rules. Montrose. Sparks—like, pre-Georgio Moroder Sparks. But some of that’s on there. Bar-Kays. You know, that kind of stuff. The new CD-Rs from (former Hardkiss vanity label) Sunburn, we’ve been listening to those a lot, they’re really good. (http://www.magnetmagazine.com/interviews/moore.html)

Yeah.

See, I sometimes think I'm a fan of Sonic Youth not so much because of their music, but because they're fans of the same music as me...

I'd like to know who/what their literary inspirations are. (I have Ginsberg on my wall.. I'm willing to bet they do too.)

The New York Dolls as well, one of their major litarary influences has to be Jack Kerouac.

The "new" New York Dolls played Conan last night. It was pretty damn rockin' too.

Uma & Kevin Smith were also guests.

It was an Uma media blitz yesterday for My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

She hit Letterman, but then yesterday she appeared on Live with Regis & Kelly & then Oprah & then Conan.

Yeah, I remember being utterly disappointed and shocked that Thurston held a rip-off, meathead medley like "Bleach" in such high esteem.

Jim O'Rourke... I think he was a major influence to the band these last few years.

I'm guessing you weren't around when Bleach came out?
I'm not being facetious - its just that Bleach may sound a little different to current ears after the whole Nirvana explosion and the adoption of that scene by, as you say, "meatheads".
It was at the time, and remains to my ears, an incredibly strong album.
