there is a professor at my department tat teaches a course on the beatles every few years (he also teaches on wagner and some israeli pop composer). i have not tkane his course, but what i understood was that the beatles had incredibley obscure uses of functional harmony that they basically invented in the pop realm. so they defiantly are 'real' music or whatever that means. i meant they had some pretty obscure chords progressions.
and if you stufy haydn's music almost all of it is I IV V I the whole way through.
so im not sure what he means by real vs fake music.
i guess most of my professors dont like not "classical" period. a lot of people are like that. no biggie

I've heard many times that classical and jazz are the *only* real music.
An explanation I got, is that it's safer to theorise about dead people's music, cause they don't argue.
If a teacher claims to know all about The Beatles, he takes the risk to be contradict by Paul or Ringo: then he will have no argument whatsoever, to maintain his credibility and wages.

A lot of them ARE uneducated, but I prefer uneducated music, really. Jazz and Classical have their merits, no question, but the simple fact is, this guy is basically justifying his job by saying that music is somehow lesser because it wasn't created by a formally educated mind. Then the people he dupes into spending 100,000 dollars on music education feel the need to say the same thing to justify the money.

Who the fuck in this day and age actually thinks that hip hop isn't music? I can't say I really like listening to it, but it's so hilariously stupid to say that, gualbert. Are you 80 years old or something? I totally agree it's closed-minded and it strikes me as extremely ignorant too.

Hip hop isn't real music, I mean it's just like THEY'RE TALKING REALLY FAST!!!!

Last time I heard hip hop wasn't music was from that Dream Theater fan girl that I knew two years ago. She also said that punk wasn't music, that music without solos wasn't music, etc. One of the most ridiculous statements ever made.
