Go to the "Cult Literature" section in your local bookshop. Pick a book at random. There's a 95% chance the author is overrated.

well there was something of a furor about him, with many (idiots) claiming him to be amazing and treatinmg him as a literary genius. i guess that was just the hype surrounding the subject matter more than anything.

Hemingway bugs me.
Sentences are too short. Clipped style is annoying. Yes it is. Like the newspaper. He bugs me a lot. Santiago can fuck the lions. |

Indeed. Writes quite good books. That's it. I guess he's not really that highly rated but Jeff Noon is still overrated. Again, writes OK, if slightly annoyingly 'cult' books. |

Also, William Gibson. I'd lump him with the above two. All are good. None of them great or anything. Although Gibson and Palahniuk I would rate higher than Jeff Noon.

I was about to say Philip K. Dick, but then I realised his stuff was actually as good as everyone made it out to be, if not better.

i dont see how shakespeare can be overrated, the little bastard wrote some 40 masterpieces, sure some are weaker than others but if people bothered to read him more i think we would throw around the word "genius" greater care. of course every time someone wins a lot more want revenge but what can you do. |

ah!
well the misunderstood sarcasm i guess is the fault of feminists & poststructuralist & postcolonial wankers everywhere who once upon a time decided to tag shakespeare as a "dead white male" & proceeded to pile a ton of undeserved criticism on the guy in order to get even for being miserable; this whole project was carried out with the most atrocious sort of prose imaginable. i'll fish around the internet for an example. |

Dan Brown - that guy couldn't write a shopping list, let alone a bleedin' book. And let's face it, when it comes to setting a scene, he ain't no Sven Hassel.

I agree that Chuck P is over-rated, his book's are good initially and then his stlye becomes agrivating.
