L7 and Bikini Kill
How about some Sleater-Kinney? The Evens would be great. Siouxsie & the Banshees Patti Smith! PJ Harvey And just for fun, give her Trout Mask Replica. They don't have to be all girl bands do they? Because you can give her some other cool stuff... Cat Stevens Elliott Smith Jeff Buckley John Frusciante Josh Klinghoffer Funkadelic A Tribe Called Quest (I Left My Wallet In El Segundo) When I was a little younger then that, I listened to a ton of Nirvana, some Zeppelin, and whenever I was on an airplane for some weird reason, I would listen to The Verve (Urban Hymns) and Fatboy Slim. When I was 14, I really got into The Red Hot Chili Peppers which helped influence my love of funk music. |

Deerhoof - "Friend Opportunity." Simply an amazing album on so many levels (and the fact that something played and sung with such child-like innocence and exhuberance could have deeper levels of meaning is in itself one of the levels).

i'm imagining a sick image of a grown man in his forties playing stuff out of his truck out loud infront of a junior school and smileing very strangely while he watches young preteen girls approach his van to ask him what songs he is playing.

I don't think you still need this advice but I'll just post this shit anyway because I'm feeling nostalgic for my young teen days. I was once a 14 year-old girl (5 years ago, actually) so here are my recommendations:
I got into Sonic Youth when I was 14 and, at that time, I especially loved Confusion is Sex and their song "Starpower". I also got into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Fever to Tell" (mostly because of their song "Date With the Night"), Sleater-Kinney, Dead Kennedys' "Fresh Fruit...", Radiohead, Interpol, The White Stripes, and I was obsessed with Nirvana and other good grunge. This was all after my nu-metal phase. For more contemporary stuff, maybe Vampire Weekend?? Shit, I dunno what popular things the kids are into these days. Sorry. Also, Pixies would be good; and some David Bowie. |

Hmmm, If I were a young girl I would love anything by Stereolab, Flaming Lips and Sufjan Stevens.

For a real punky reggae party vibe, pick up the first Slits LP, "Cut". Lots of great tracks on there, plus a v nice cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".
