Stretch me to the point where i stop
run ten thousand miles and then think of me
i think you know the place we should meet
don't worry if it's dark and i'm late

run me out a thin wire
help me to kill this love
i'll join you tonight at the bottom of the well
feel around in the dark until you get the idea

i'm not moving doesn't mean i can't
flame on in my head
my best friend sucked his wife's blood and shriveled up
he was mistaken for sane

we move and groove and cut loose from fear
we should kill time, we'll shut it down
i've got a pipeline straight to the heart of you
opening in my head

bright glass on a chain being wound around us
the twiddling of idle hands
dripping with guilt
a secret form of punishment
axes through skulls
shadow of futility
endless revolt
the shifting of light and shadows

no-one is right
nothing is solid
nothing can be hold in my hand for long

we
should
kill
time

after all them years, still strikes me with same power, even more. such a great lyric. spot on.

Sonic Youth's lyrics were so awesome when they were oblique patchworks of words.

perhaps my favourite set of lyrics to any song. I can spit them out at will
without even having to think about it. For kicks, here's the extra bit Lee wrote on the inner sleeve for Sister:

discontinuity

sandy beaches
bridges sinking into the sea
beautiful confusion
you're a fading memory

we should kill time

I think it was in Goodbye 20th Century that I read they chose to fade out Lee's vocals to have a long instrumental coda, so those lines were probably spoken on the take, just not mixed in.

Evol and Sister are lyrically their best albums, I think.
Actually, just their best albums in general.

This song is amazing. One of my favourites. I wish I could've seen them play it live back then.

love this song. i seem to remember in one of the books about sy that lee had a long spoken word type thing to go over the amazing instrumental fade out of this song but they scrapped it. i wonder what those lyrics were and if he ended up re-using them.

another and TheMadcapLaughs should meet (I think you know the place, and topic of discussion).

I actually thought the bio said the deleted spoken word was in the coda of "Mote", which I found curious (since there's definitely deleted dialog from the bridge of "Lee #2").

Whether it was the influence of Philip K Dick or not, Sister stands out as one of their three or four best albums lyrically. It was albums like Sister and EVOL which caused us Doors and Patti Smith fans to sit up and take notice.

Their best albums lyrically seem to have arrived in two noticeable 'batches': EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation in the mid to late '80s, and A Thousand Leaves and NYC: Ghosts & Flowers toward the end of the '90s decade.

Sister is still my favourite. Each song has it's own personality.
I did a version of this on acoustic.
Not even close to perfection but the mood and tempo kept on haunting me, so I had to try.

this song has haunted me since the first time I heard it. I'll never forget getting caught in a violent thunderstorm while driving home one night, and this song looping thru it

haha, great minds think alike, right? I remember that part about Mote as well,
because I found it strange that they felt the need to do that more than
once.
