R.I.P. Charles Gocher / Sun City Girls

With deep regret, we must announce that Charles Gocher passed away yesterday in Seattle due to a long battle with cancer at the age of 54. He is survived by the two of us who adopted him as a brother 25 years ago and his many friends around the world. He will be missed more than most could ever know. Our thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement during the past three, very difficult years. Many of you were not aware that Charles was ill and that’s because he wanted it that way. Details of a memorial in his honor will be announced soon.

Sad to hear about his death. Great band. Sun City Girls were supposed to play in Belgium on the 3rd of March at the (K-RAA-K)3 FESTIVAL 2007.

I am sure feel better that you got that expensive Sun City Girls LP now

Charlie dead, that just doesn't seem possible. A drummer like that is so alive seeming, that I can't quite fathom him not being so anymore. I only saw them a handful of times (they played so damn infrequently in recent years), but they were always amazing. I so hoped to see him drum again. I can't imagine they would continue as Sun City Girls without him.

Boiling them down to an hour is next to impossible. They certainly don't have any "hits", even compared to somebody like Sonic Youth. I'd imagine if you talked to 10 different SCG fans and asked for their top 10 favorite songs, you wouldn't get that much repetition at all.

I honestly just grabbed the 5 albums I happen to own (couldn't find Torch of the Mystics, dammit!) and burned a few MP3s from my iTunes onto a cd. Glad you liked it, it really is somewhat coincidental that it covered such a span, but then they tend to put out records with stuff from all over their career (for lack of a better word, "career" seems pretty off talking about a band like this.)

Our sincerest thanks for the many letters, messages, posts, and tributes all of you have sent to us this past week in support after the passing of Charlie. There were simply too many of them for us to even begin to respond to personally.
We have decided to hold a private memorial in Seattle for close friends only to celebrate his legacy. At a later date, when we can collect our thoughts to properly honor him, we will pay tribute to Charles at a public venue by screening films and displaying some of his drawings and photographs, and possibly perform some of his songs.
As many of you have suspected, Sun City Girls will no longer exist as a performing entity. Nor will any new recording projects be created utilizing the name Sun City Girls. There are many unreleased recordings and videos that will surface when time permits to release them.
