Substitute 'coverage of political reporting' with 'competetence of new labour' and see if it reads any better.

I know the Independent has traditionally been a moderate Labour paper. Its a very strange attack. I wonder what he considers a shining example of the British news coverage? The Sun? The Daily Mail?

I just bought the Independent today and the front page is a defiant answer to his attack. You could argue it proves his point but they claim it's because they opposed Iraq that he singled them out.
It's so rediculous how he tries to score tabloid headlines and then attacks the sensible papers. I can't wait for him to leave, only problem is that Brown is a discipline of Adam Smith

anyway, i agree with tony blair on this point, the newspapers in this country are appaling, whether it's the guardian, the telegraph, the mail, the times or the mirror and the sun. this is not to say that the government are any good, just that it's high time that the media got taken down a peg or two, they weald far to much power, lack any shred of integrity, will print anything if they think they'll sell more, and are most journalists are utter morons.

T&B im sorry but The Guardian and The Independant are excellent papers. If he attacked The Mail, The Express, The Star I would be wholly in agreement with him. I fail to see how the Independent's headlines are sensationalist. What world newspaper do you suggest is a good example of good journalism?

I too have trouble with the apparent fact that the person in charge of this country honestly believes that The Independent is journalistically worse (worthier of scorn) than the Sun or the Mail or the Express.

Granted, I don't read the Indie as regularly as I used to, so I can't unequivocally defend it, but I do have a rather unfortunate level of access to the tabloids (people leave them everywhere), and it is genuinely quite shocking to me to hear that the Prime Minister believes the former is more damaging to the "spirit of the nation" than the execrable latter. No matter how far the Independent may have fallen in recent years, I find it very hard it believe that it is genuinely journalistically worse than The Sun, The Mail, The Express, The Mirror, etc.

But perhaps Tony doesn't read The Sun.

All headlines could be described as sensationalist. Headlines are designed to grap attention. I dont think the headlines are particularly sensational. Certainly the layout is colourful and the wording of headlines is eye-catching but its not the same as what the tabloids and middle markets do. And aside from the headlines the paper has a number of talented writers. Anyway I read the Guardian, its Arts coverage is much better.

The Independent is suited for readers from many walks of life who all share the ability to make their own minds up on matters over others' views as well as the sacred facts. The headlines are designed to be provokative, yes, but not sensationalism. Plus we can all laugh as the pretence of Tracey Emin every Friday.

The Guardian's my second favourite read. A centre-left paper, they don't tend to cover as much as the Indy but have a great balance.

The Telegraph is another I can stand to read. Traditionally Tory but well balanced in my opinion. The letters section is a good laugh.

The Times. I've never been able to read an entire article. They seem to inject everything that is dull into every last word they publish.

The Sun or one of those (can't make out which is which) surprised me when I found out the editor was a woman. Still not very funny and very bad with news. Bigoted too.

Once one first heard the phrase the Daily Sport they become perpetually misanthropic.

I think the economist is far more opinionated that any of the broadsheets, I can't read it for long before I become disgusted by its ideology.
