what do you mean by out there? for instance, in my book, "piper at the gates of dawn" is a lot more out there than "sgt. pepper". wouldn't you consider late 60s free jazz (e.g. a lot of the output on impulse!, by trane, ayler, sanders et al.) to be way more out there than e.g. "agharta" (which is essentially some funky jazz-rock jamming)? how can "axis: bold as love" be more out there than "ascension"? what about karlheinz stockhausen, john cage etc.? why do people make lists??

Sure, but this was probably from a mainstream music mag so what so you expect. I think On the Corner is probably Miles' most out there record. Sun Ra has done plenty more out records than Space is the Place. Solar Myth Approach vols 1 and 2 are much more out there. Hampton Grease Bands Music To Eat is a fairly notorious oddball record that should probably be on there.
I don't know if I would put a lot of the impulse! stuff on there. Not ahead of a lot of stuff on BYG or ESP disk. Sonny Sharrocks' Monkey Pockie Boo is pretty wild. Plenty of stuff on ESP disk, not least the Cromagnon record which is definitely one of the most out there things recorded. You could argue with this list all day and all night, and it will be enjoyable to do so, but it's actually a pretty decent list all in all. Whether they are all really 'out there' or not, there is a lot of ace records on that list. Where did this list come from by the way? I've a feeling I've seen it before in a music mag...maybe Uncut or a similar publication. |

I'd be inclined to leave improv out of it because pretty much all of it is bound to sound impenetrable and thus out there to the 'average' listener. You could make an entire top 50 of improv records that are arguably more out there than this list. Or 50 jazz records that are more out there or 50 psyche records that are more out there etc, etc. |

Yeah, I don't know what they mean by out there. Like, The Whitey Album is more out there to me (weird guitar marches, Madonna covers, and rap) than Loveless which was out there with the guitars but far more unified.

This is a sampling of some good music overall, but not the most "out there" even by the artists represented. Space is the Place is actually one of Ra's more accessible records in a lot of ways, while Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy would be the very definition of "out there". Similarly, while Ascension is more out than say Giant Steps, how could anything other than Om be Coltrane's most out record? Similar deal with Floyd, as Piper is pretty damn pop next to Ummagumma.

10.White noise An electric storm (1969)
It's only "out there" because it's from 1969. Good album though! Anyway,,,, not sure what "out there" is, but i'm guessing it means "kinda weird and not what you usually hear every day", so... 1. flossie & the unicorns - lmnop 2. omoide hatoba - [anything] 3. mr. bungle - disco volante 4. vicious hairy mary - orchestral phantasma 5. renaldo and the loaf - struve n snurf 6. the residents - meet the residents 7. captain beefheart - trout mask replica 8. meat shits - 54098579087445098745087 songs ep 9. jon - smoke 10. boredoms - pop tatari 11. space streakings - 7-toku 12. shakuhachi surprise - space streakings sighted over mount shasta 13. mong hang - family 14. zeni zuva - s/t 15. copycat massacre - ercassam tacypoc 16.-50. a shitload of boredoms side projects and so on and so on are a hell of a lot more "out there" than anything on this list (except trout mask replica which i agree with and put on there). you may list more if you'd like! |

i usually like lists but this one just seems strange. there are m,any things one can judge an album by (relatively) best lyrics, best album, best cover....
but most out there just seems like such a broad term that how can anyone really find one album that is more out there than another. is onderful rainbow more out there than hypermagic mountain? is burned mind more out there than hair police's constantly terrified, or vice versa? what are they measuring these extremes by? is merzbow more or less more out there than john coltrane, or ornette coleman? what about beethoven? he was pretty out there.... just putting this thought, out there.

Good call on The Godz, they're in with a shout. That Cromagnon record though is probably the oddest thing I have heard on ESP Disk, Godz included. |

the strangest record i've ever heard is probably origin's hesitation by fushitsusha. i don't really get that list at all though, some of that stuff i can understand the weirdness factor, other things are just good but not weird records, like os mutantes or the beatles or jimi hendrix or my bloody valentine or whatever

I don't agree with everything on the list, but I'm glad Tim Buckley's Starsailor is included. It should have been higher on the list however.

Is Origin's Hesitation the one where Haino plays drums? If so, yes that is a pretty odd record. |
