As several boardies have said they preferred New Order to Joy Division, I thought a poll asking which of those 2 bands you think is the best could be a good idea (I was surprised because I always thought that Joy Division were undeniably better).

I come down on the side of New Order.
Joy Division were good, but wouldn't have been as legendary if it weren't for Ian Curtis dying the way he did. New Order have written some incredible songs. |

I vote for Joy Division. New Order made a lot of stinkers. Plus my favorite New Order song was actually written when they were Joy Division.

The Can vs. Faust thread? Where I said it's like comparing Mozart to Beck?
This is like comparing Boredoms to Bloodhound Gang. Give me a break. Joy Division for the win. |

Joy Division. No contest.
As someone else said, New Order's best stuff was written when they were Joy Division. Joy Division were legendary way before Ian Curtis' death. In my house at least.

New Order entirely. I feel like Joy Division is the ashes to New Order's Pheonix, or something lame like that.
Of course, New Order did have a lot of stinkers.

I haven't been an "angsty teenager" for many years and I still vastly prefer Joy Division. New Order's first album is pretty great and I love Blue Monday and Low Life, but they made so much horrible stuff that it dilutes the great material to no end. The amount of weak tracks compared to great ones in JD's catalogue is so slim as to be statistically irrelevant.

I almost always prefer bass-driven to synth-driven.

New Order were creative guys with a whole lot of funding to mess around, but that only makes them in league with the Chemical Brothers or some other hit and miss alternative pop laboratory with some amount of finger on the current.
Joy Division were one of the most important first generation post-punk bands, and ironically had infinitely more pop sense as an underbelly! That some of the same guys went on to make less edgy and simultaneously less relevant dance mix experiments... Ian obviously wasn't sticking around for that. |

New Order is a mockery, especially compared to Joy Division. However, they do a fucking heartwrenching Ceremony (still an Ian/JD song).
And speaking of Joy Division! I can't wait to get my hands on those vinyl reissues!!! AHHH!
