Dispersion and High Rise Live are great.
I will YSI a CDR I got by them called "Psychedelic French Meeting 98." It's way outta print, so not much guilt there. |

First things first, High Rise and Mainliner could easily have been the same group. High Rise was Asahito Nanjo on bass and vocals and Munehiro Narita on guitar, joined by a succession of drummers (including Yuro Ujiie, Pill and free-jazz veteran Shoji Hano in the past, and Koji Shimura currently), while Mailiner was Asahito Nanjo (bass, vocal), Makoto Kawabata (guitar) and Tatsuya Yoshida (drums). Mainliner was kind of High Rise crossed with Acid Mothers Temple.
For High Rise my recommendations are Disallow or Live, both on Squealer (http://www.squealermusic.com/catalog/hrise.html). I'm not a fan of Dispersion or High Rise 2 as I think they're a bit underproduced and tend to wimp out a bit when they should be shredding your speakers. For Mainliner I'd recommend Imaginative Plain or Psychedelic Polyhedron. Imaginative Plain is quite similar to High Rise, while Psychedelic Polyhedron is more like Acid Mothers. On the subject of High Rise and associated bands, can anyone give me any recommendations regarding Munehiro Narita's solo stuff or Kyoaku No Intention?

Dangit. That was me. This is the same one. Sorry, I have no other digitzed High Rise to share... Sonicl, "underproduced" is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard said about High Rise! ALL their stuff is recorded in the red! It all sounds "underproduced." I know what you mean though. The worst of the "underproduced' sound is Psychedelic Sped Freaks 84-88; very very shrill and thin-sounding to me, though some people I know just love it. That Psychedelic Polyhedron Mainliner LP is an alltime favorite, as is the "Seventh Seal" LP released by Acme, containing Nanjo and Kawabata. Whoa, man, mystical journey time... |

I'll concur on Disallow and High Rise Live, but I rather liked Dispersion myself. Deuteronomy is a kickass track.
*Edit: I always post late in the game, after others have made much more informative contributions. So, scratch that. |

That's the only album of theirs as far as I'm concerned. All else pails next to the might of this album.

first of all thanks for your recommendations. special thanks to sonicl for the mainliner recommendations
yeah, i knew mainliner and high rise are pretty much the same band. in fact, when i first heard them or saw them mentioned i thought their name was "high rise/mainliner". i love both bands, i just wanted to listen to more high rise. Savage Clone: i have all my titles scrambled right now and i also people at the yahoo group have uploaded a lot of munehiro narita and related stuff which i have missed, so i got confused there. thanks anyway. by the way, where's the davis redford triad boot you promised? |

That "Black Sky" song on Mellow Out is my favorite particular song by Mainliner...such a cool funk strut, and yet the very definition of heavy.
Each time I saw High Rise or Mainliner live, it was amazing. Yet, strangely, the crowd never numbered more than about 20 or 30. What a shame! [i]Psychedelic Speed Freaks 84-88" is the one album outta the whole lot that I rarely, if ever, revisit. Great songs are evident, but the bottom end is completely missing....unacceptable. Dispersion and II rate as my most recommendable High Rise albums. I love that VU-meters-pinned-right style!

How have I missed this one...
Yes II is probably the most furiously rockin' album I own. Turn you cry! I wasn't so fond of dissallow, but I like the song Ikon alot. I've been meaning to get the live one and dispersion. I haven't heard Mainliner yet. |
