a different version of the "could you love someone who does not love sonic youth" thread, that I though was ridiculous, of course its possible to love someone who has a different opinion concerning ONE band. but could you love a person who refuses to listen to anything beyond the radio? i once though that it was impossible, but i have met someone that has radically changed my opinion. in high school, i dated the same girl for three years, and she had decent in music, not great, but she also loved to party, liked that i plkayed guitar and skateboarded, and she was the first girl i loved. i then went of to college, needless to say it didnt work out, it sucked, i got depressed, all the normal bullshit. from then on i dated three different girls. first one i met at an animal collective show, she had great taste in music, we dated for about a month, and i found that all we did was argue needlessley about music and pop culture, and it was boring and irriating dating a girl with the exact same interests as me. i then met a girl through a friend, and we bonded over drugs and ornette coleman. she was absolutley stunningly beautiful, but obviously we ended up getting too fucked up on drugs and after two months i couldnt stand her. the third girl isnt worth mentioning but she also had great taste in music. but currently, i am dating a girl who doesnt like or care about good music at all, is extremly preppy, doesnt read much more than romance novels, and shes in a fucking SORORITY. and yknow what, im completley in love with her. her bitchy sorority friends all give her shit for dating some "werid sketchy dude who wears ripped jeans and has headphones on all the time", and she tells them to fuck off. that my friends, is charachter. moral of the story, there is so much more to relationships than taste in music and pop culture, and its pointless to go around looking around for a girlfriend/boyfriend who digs the boredoms. do people agree with me or do i just sound like a sappy deuche?

Yes, music is great, but it's not the most important thing in the world.

Hell yeah I agree with you, people that see love as compatible lists of lifestyle choices are fucked. Of course if I did date someone who had shit taste in music, I would probably make fun of them for that. And if this girl had the right mind, she would call me out on something in return like how I can't cook or whatever. Relationships are dynamic, not static.

i dated someone who had bad taste in music and she was pretty lame. it seems like girls that i date that have somewhat similar tastes as me are girls who's iq is more than 55.
but then again, it doesn't really matter in the long run. |

It doesn't matter AT ALL. The older you get, the more you will understand this fact. As batreleaser well pointed, sometimes diversity is even welcomed and I can't personally imagine going out with a "hip" girl that would brag about new Bark Haze record or what. My girlfriend likes jazz and I'm perfectly fine with that, not even thinking if I consider it 'good taste' or 'bad taste'.

I'm spoiled by having wound up with a girl who digs the cool shit.
I would hate not being able to share fun shows and new records with her. I mean come on, if it's a consuming interest wouldn't you want at least the potential for mutual enjoyment? |

yeah i mean, just in general, if shes great and SHE likes cool music thats a double plus, but my current girlfriend is by no means dumb, shes one of the top in her class at the u of a eller busiiness school which is one of the most prestigious business schools of all public universities. shes brilliant with numbers, i on the other hand can understand literature and history and philosophy. this also works out great, i can help her in her artistic classes, and she can help me in math, which i have struggled with my whole life. |

I dont think I'd get to the "love" point without having some common ground/ interests ... Including music, but ive never been in that position so I can't say for sure. When I met my husband, he was wearing a ministry shirt. That's why we started talking. It isnt why I love him, but it was what initially made me start up convo.

Sure, as long as we could trade off while in the car. I hate Nickelback, but it's not like my ears start to bleed if they are on. I sit there thinking this is crap, but I don't start to cry or anything. |

well yeah if she were awesome in other ways, but i'd prefer to be able to share my biggest interest with a girlfriend. it's not like girls with good taste in music are thin on the ground.

I don't really meet people who are totally out of touch with the culture I live in very often anyway.

I don't actually know anyone, in the flesh world, whose record collection doesn't include a handful of things I can tolerate.
There's a great thing to do at people's houses, in the quiet hours, when the party is dying. I did this at a house party a few years ago first, and it's amazing. If the host has played mostly stuff that's pretty awful (Dido, Moby, u2 etc) then ask them to play the record they're most embarassed to like. And it will always, without fail, be amazing. If they've played killer music all evening, the embarassing record will also be amazing. Win-win. Anyway, it's politics that is the real test of a relationship, I find. I also find the problem of my massive cock can prove difficult for some, but I doubt you all have the same problem.
