shoot the dead.
simply put, I am in love with Mr. Romero since 1996 (when I was 14 years old and I thought It might've been just a crush). This movie destroys. Love it. Love it. Love it. |

I used to really love Romero's movies in high school when I would watch horror movies with my friends. Still have the Dead series movies in my living room. However, Land of the Dead left a dry taste and I've really haven't watched them in a while.
Would be nice to blaze and put on Dawn of the Dead again, though. (wow, just remembered my avatar... yeah, had that one saved on the hard drive since the daze of younger) |

Diary of the Dull. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Romero has 3 GREAT films: Crazies, Martin, and Dawn of the Dead. The rest fall between decent (Bruiser, Night of the Living dead) to awful (all the other Dead films, his half of Two Evil Eyes, Monkey shines, etc.). I'm glad you like it, but I personally think it's boring and just completely dull in every way. It's more of Romero's half-baked "social commentary". Holy shit, we live in the internet age! Technology! PARANOIA!! WARFARE! It's the same bullshit he's been hitting us over the head with for years. It's just dull. Almost nothing happens in the film. The acting's good, the directing's excellent.. I love the long shots without cuts, pretty revolutionary actually to not cut away at all from the gore.. a very CLEVER film but it doesn't really say anything that hasn't been said, not to mention that it's .. it's just like nothing, you know? NOTHING happens in the film really. It's just people driving around and running around and video taping shit. Very very meh. A good idea though. Would've made for a really cool short film. |

It would have been brilliant if it preceeded Blair Witch with the style.

Glad someone else sees it like that (although I do think Night is a great film). He's been living off the brilliance of his early films: Martin, Jack's Wife/Season of the Witch, Crazies, Night and Dawn for too long. Day was a playground discussion about militarism and Land seemed to say nothing that anyone with a minimum of social awareness wouldn't already know. Romero is a spent force and has been for almost thirty years now. He's become little more than the Naomi Klein of horror, which is a shame considering his early work was so good. I'll see Diary (as I would any Romero film) but with no expectation that it'll mark anything like a return to the glory of what, for me, remains his best film, Martin. |

Hmm, I only see similarities in the aesthetic, not so much the style. Well Blair Witch was all about the amateur, cheap, shoddy, shakey camera with a strangely claustraphobic atmosphere (claustraphobic yet in the vast, open woods -- crazy)... this has loads of style and is all about the exploration of high-tech devices and the camera actually doesn't shake the whole time.
Really, it's not an original idea by any means but it's an interesting way to make a somewhat big budget zombie film. |

See, I think Night was great for the time and a classic of course, but I like the remake better... strange.
He is definitely just living like a fat rat off his crappy films. |

I can see what you mean about Night being very much a film of its time but equally it's stood the test of time. It could definitely teach any number of post-Tarantino filmmakers a think or to about low budget filmmaking.

So what's Romero's best film after Dawn of the Dead?

I'd say Martin. A vampire picture. If you consider a vampire as someone drinking human blood and stick to that. And it's got romantic comedy tiny bits. Quote:
Does he have to be stopped by all means? |

I liked Diary. I saw it at an independent theater in Nashville back in March and Romero was there and he talked before the film.I liked how it went back to the beginning of the zombies and not some weird apocalyptic thing like Land was.

acdc518, I dunno if it really took the series back to its roots persé, it seemed to be about on the same level as Land of the Dead in its depiction of the zombie apocalypse (and it still used Romero's favorite metaphor he's been using for the last few movies: WE ARE THE ZOMBIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
I take horror movies seriously because they're important to me, I've spent thousands of hours of my life watching them. Personally, I say fuck Romero, everyone should watch Braindead/Dead Alive instead. |

I meant that it went back to when the zombie outbreak was first starting and the characters didn't know what was going on. and the zombies are back to the way they were in the old films (they don't run around and fire guns) maybe I just liked it because I saw it immediately after hearing Romero talk about it and watched it with a bunch of hardcore zombie fans.
I agree Dead Alive kicks major ass. |

Personally, I'd say fuck you. Nothing personal, but that's a very shitty thing you just wrote. If Romero didn't come up with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in '68, all of the horror flicks that matter (and that you seem to be enjoying) wouldn't be around. Carpenter, Cronenberg, Hopper, Craven, Raimi to mention a few of those influenced. Oh, and all this whining couples so well with all of the whiney fuckers going around with the bullshit regarding SY supposedly selling out and sounding dull with all their latest releases. I can't see what's the problem with all this. Romero is STILL out there making a statement about how he feels about society today. Which is everything the rest of cinema isn't doing these days. Easy for me to think that you can't dig into social commentary 'cuz your probably busy "playing nintendo until the whole thing blows over". |

oh, and all of Romero's are just great movies. I'd say that my faves besides the DEAD series are THE CRAZIES, MONKEY SHINES and MARTIN too.
on a sidenote atsonicpark, you certainly seem to despise that old fave metaphor of GAR, yet you seem to be confirming that the living dead are among us... |

Huh?
I said I'm glad you liked this movie, but I thought it was pretty pisspoor. It's nice you can get into Romero's zombie films for their social commentary (man that was a ridiculous sentence haha), but I don't think he's made a good film in a long time. I'm sorry I insulted your sacred cow, but if you pay attention, most people tend to agree that he's just not a very good director. And I never denied Night of the Living Dead as an important movie. But.. uh.. a LOT of directors make important films and then release shit afterwards. It's not a big deal. I just think Romero's films are generally disappointing; he's no Tobe Hooper (who I hate pretty much everything by) but he has just seemed to half ass everything since Dawn of the Dead. And in all honesty, you really think all of his films are great? The Dark Half is horrible. Monkey Shines is pretty shitty except for the hilarious quadrapalegic sex scene (in all reality, I think Monkey Shines could have been decent but it was way too long and the ending was ridiculous). His half of Two Evil Eyes is absolutely AWFUL. Land of the Dead is a joke of a film, and Day of the Dead is boring beyond belief until the last 20 minutes or so. And I'm never bored. I can respect what he's done for horror movies and his influence but I'm not going to pretend he still makes quality films. But when he does make one, I'll be the first to praise it. Honesty is great! I'm going to say something which will probably read as condescending but I mean it in the nicest way possible: I am very familiar with horror films, VERY, as in I own well over 800 and I've seen probably 3-4 times as many as that from all over the world... and I think a lot of people might get value out of some movies because they haven't seen anything better. But.. I've seen better, and I'm not impressed. No biggy. |

The ending of Monkey Shines ain't shitty.
It is my opinion. Not a fact. An opinion. Seeing a harmless man turning into an animal to kill an animal when that animal leaves behind her beastie behaviour to become nearly human should move people with a heart. I can respect atsonicpark being an asshole, but it's pretty hard to tell someone how arrogant he seems without being rude. Especially when the man seems so in love with his knowledge. Read your posts, you never have an opinion, you leave that to other, and every single idea that pops out of your head or mouth or fingertips becomes a fact. So there, back on ignore, I'll enjoy the board again. |
