Wow. I'm surprised. The Cure are one of my favorite bands ever. I love them, ridiculousness and all. I think they were the best mainstream pop band of the '80s by lightyears (the Smiths come close... REM can basically suck it). I'm not sure I want them in there. To me, the Cure, despite being an internationally known and revered band, is essentially an "indie" band. I like to think of them that way, anyway. Ridiculous, I know, but whatever... they had a shoegazey sound when they weren't skirting the edges of post-punk, and that puts them in the same family as the '80s "college rock" groups.... for me, anyway. So, how do we feel about this? Also: anyone like the Cure? |

Itīs quite same to me will the Cure get into Rīn`R Hall of Fame or not. Itīs still one of my favourite bands! The greatest albums are first four, but I also love 4:13 Dream and all the other albums, Wild Mood swings is their weakest album.

I don't know if it's an age thing but I've always thought of The Cure as a pop band. They certainly were at the time. It's only hindsight that has given them any other definition.

I wouldn't call it hindsight. I'd call it Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.
note: I listen to The Cure (at least) on a weekly basis and have done so for almost 30 years. lolRockNRoll!!!!!!! |

The Cure was/are definitely a pop band.
So were the Smiths. So was Joy Division, really. Anyway, their legacy is firmly implanted in the counter-culture mythos. |

Was never a big Cure fan, even though there are songs I like. Doesn't really surprise me that they may be getting into the rock n roll hall of fame. The way that place is regulated defies logic, really....which isn't to say I don't think they deserve to get in. No doubt they've been influential on countless bands and have stuck it out long enough to where they deserve it.
Joy Division > The Cure + Smiths (totally hate the latter). But yeah, I agree...all of the above are definitely "pop" bands. This term is often misunderstood.

The Cure is the shit. love all sorts of the shit. They deserve to be recognized as bad-asses. took the fucking hippies at rolling stone forever to admit sabbath who were as seminal as anyone.

Totally need to be in. They're one of the best b-side bands ever and have shown so much depth and growth since they started.
Here's hoping.... ~Jeremy~

I agree about that the Cure is more pop than r`n`r-band.
I donīt know very much about RīnīR Hall of fame and Iīm not even interested to know about that. But what comes into my mind about that is maybe it was founded by someone who thought Rīn`R is too dangerous and if we put it into the "museum", it changes a little bit less dangerous (If I remember correct Stooges get into Rīn`R-Hall of fame recently)? If it is that way then maybe many politicians still donīt understand that the people who play dangerous music not very often put the bomb anywhere (of course there are exceptions for example part of the norwegian black metal scene). Or then Rīn`R- Hall of Fame was founded by person who thought Rīn`r deserved also same kind of "cultural recognitions" as for example classic music had or any other art form. Of course itīs kind of good thing Rock is not "lower cultural form" that much as it has been. Anyway, I think rock-music donīt need such recognitions. Iīm very glad there is still something that a man canīt put into "cage". The Stooges Raw Power is still very dangerous album although the Stooges are in Rīn`R Hall of Fame. |

Joy Division was a great band, and should be in the Hall as well, but they never got the chance to progress. The Cure did.
They're absolutely pop, but they're on the alt side of the spectrum. I hope they get in. They've been eligible for years, and as far as I'm concerned they should have been elected straightaway in 2003. Disintegration is obviously about as seminal as an album can get. Everyone from Pitchfork to TIME knows that. |

Although the Cure is mostly pop band, it had few quite "rocky" tunes like Shake Dog Shake, Open, End and Us or them (which in my opinion has more blood and sweat than any Guns `n`Roses song).
I think also everybody, who have a "black-lip-pop" image from the Cure should listen it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oQ7WJhLHBk |

Meh, overall they're alt-pop. The ultimate alt-pop band in some ways.
People who think they're pussies, or hate them out of loyalty to Joy Divison (no idea why so many people think like this) should listen to Pornography. People who don't think they're influential should listen to Disintegration. People who think they're too sunny and bright should listen to Seventeen Seconds. People who think they're too dark should listen to Kiss Me. They got it all. |
