Death Proof thrilled me. It can exist by itself, whereas Planet Terror is all about its artificial reel flaws and intentional senselessness. Clearly Tarantino is the more competent filmmaker and writer. Rodriguez just doesn't have it; he has some ideas, but he isn't a totally unique filmmaker or writer. With Tarantino's films I get the impression that I'm observing the work of a man who is probably just as in love with art as he is with life. My favorite moment in Death Proof: QT's close-up of Rosario Dawson's awestruck eyes as she observes the Aussie/Uma-lookalike riding atop the hood. Oh, and watching Kurt cry over his gun-shot wound was totally hilarious.

Have heard rumours that Miramax are trying to compensate for the films poor box office so far by considering releasing the film as two seperate features in some other countries.

yes, it's going to be released as 2 different films here (holland) and the same goes for a lot of other countries i think. quelle bollocks.
there's even going to be a month in between the two releases. bollocks again. of course there will be cinemas showing both films back to back at some point, but that's not how it's going to be widely released. bollocks. i'm definitely not going to see it in the cinem when it's two different movies; that's just bollocks... not sure if i'd have gone otherwise (don't go to the cinema that much and i wasn't too impressed by kill bill), but still... bollocks. |

yes, it wasn't bad, just not anywhere near to justifying the hype.
but that's pretty much inevitable whenever tarantino is coming with a new movie. |

I never knew she had it like that. It's just too bad what happened to her.

I have my doubts about the whole Grindhouse concept anyway. If he and Rodriguez wanted to make an exploitation movie, then why not just make the damn thing, instead of doing some kind of an ironic tribute to them.
A film like The Exterminator wasn't a tribute to anything, and it definitely wasn't ironic. It was just an honest exercise in ripping off Death Wish II. Now THAT'S how you make a 'grindhouse' movie. |

No double bill release, but thank Jesus, Death Proof is out in the UK now and Planet Terror is to follow.
What can I say about Death Proof? Tarantino has done it again. The dialogue could be called 'boring' by a casual moviegoer, but just listen to it for fuck's sake! It's actual realistic conversation. The first half of the film really had me rooting for Stuntman Mike too, I just wanted to see Jungle Julia and her crew get what was coming to them. Although by the time Stuntman Mike had killed off the hippie girl my attitude had changed. But way to go, Tarantino, for messing with my character perception. Second half of the film was mildly tarnished by the Kiwi's bad acting, but she more than made up for it with her fantastic stuntwork, so whatever. It's really great to see an action film WITHOUT CGI, finally. It really is about time somebody made a film like this again. And Tarantino has. So fuck yeah. It's films like this (and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, mmm*) that keep my love affair with American pop culture alive and well. Also, Machete looks hilarious, roll on MEXPLOITATION! * |

Absolutely loved Death Proof. Its so silly, and it meant to be that way, you know a films good when a womans leg quite visibly comes off in a car crash.
Brilliant stunts and car chases, no CGI crap... References to vanishing point, what a film that is. And the ending was hilarious. What more could you want? |

I'm not surprised that they are spiltting the DVDs apart, "Grindhouse" was put together for its theatrical presentation. A two feature film DVD package for under $30 would have been pretty sweet, but again Tarantino is releasing the longer cut of "Death Proof", the one that he premired in Cannes, once again, like "Kill Bill" the U.S. got screwed.

i dunno if they got screwed, since death proof is fucknig TERRIBLE. probably the worst film i've EVER seen.
i love b-movies, i can watch almost anything, and i love tarantino, but how can ANYONE defend that movie? that film is just... wow. words can't describe how just SHIT it is. and not "so bad it's good"; not "bad in a cool way"; it was just fucking HORRID. wow. so, i'm glad they split that shit up. |
